Celebrating the visionaries who created New York's vibrant Off- and Off-Off-Broadway theater.
Dolores Deane Walker, a member of Actors Equity and The Dramatists Guild, is an actor, writer, producer, lawyer, and founding member of Westbeth Playwrights Feminist Collective. She spearheaded the formation of the Collective and the creation of WPFC’s first Off-Broadway show, RAPE IN (1971). This evening of collective works included her play ABIDE IN DARKNESS. Her additional Off-Broadway credits include: RECESS (1968), ACROSS THE STREET (1971), LAMENT and THE INTERVIEW of the WESTBETH CABARET (1972), ANIMAL MONOLOGUES (1972), BODIES (1972), APPETIZER from WICKED WOMEN (1973), a revised production of THE INTERVIEW (1973) and AMAZONS from WE CAN FEED EVERYBODY HERE (1974).
Walker was born in a small town near San Antonio, Texas. She attended high school in Dallas while appearing in the original production of Inherit the Wind. She then went to the University of Texas, Arlington. Before moving to New York, she performed in repertory theatre at both Margo Jones Theatre in Dallas and the Alley Theatre in Houston. Walker moved to New York in 1964, where she wrote plays and acted in theatre. Her play RECESS, originally produced at La Mama, was adapted into a film, which won the Atlanta International Film Festival in 1969. Her co-authored play, OX-ROAST, produced by Equity Library Theatre, was performed at the Lincoln Center Bruno Walter Auditorium. Walker moved into the Westbeth Artist Housing in 1970 after seeing an ad in a newspaper and being recommended by Ellen Stewart. Prior to beginning law school in 1974, she taught at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Now she teaches such courses as Blacklisted New York Playwrights and Screenwriters, Contemporary Women Playwrights, Contemporary Black Playwrights, and Contemporary Playwrights and Politics at the IRP, which is part of The New School.
