Celebrating the visionaries who created New York's vibrant Off- and Off-Off-Broadway theater.
Ted Story is an actor, director, and author who co-founded and served as the artistic director of the Impossible Ragtime Theater (IRT). Founded in 1974 by Story, George Ferencz, Cynthia Crane, and Pam Mitchell, the IRT produced over 100 plays on four stages and was a well-regarded Off-Off-Broadway theater until it shuttered in 1980. Story’s Off-Off-Broadway directing credits with the IRT include: IVANOV (1976), PLAY STRINDBERG (1977), THE UNICORN IN CAPTIVITY (1978), NAPOLEON’S DINNER (1979), ROOM FOR ONE WOMAN (1979), SUICIDE IN B-FLAT (1979 – First New York production), and THE SEAGULL (1980).
Ted Story was born in Merchantville, New Jersey. He graduated from Columbia University. He began his acting career studying at the HB Studio and later with Frank Corsaro, appearing in theatrical productions, including summer stock, The Deputy on Broadway, and the Lincoln Center revival of SOUTH PACIFIC (1967). His other projects include directing the premiere of Flights of Angels at the Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck, NY, and producing GRACE AND GLORIE (1996) Off-Broadway at the Laura Pels Theatre. He was a resident director and dramaturg at the Shenandoah Valley Playwrights Retreat for six years. Story was on the Executive Board of SDC (Stage Directors & Choreographers) for four years. Most recently, he co-wrote and directed “Shake-speare’s Treason,” co-written and performed by Hank Whittemore, a one-man play that argues that Shakespeare’s sonnets were written by Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford. This play was given a ‘request performance’ at The Globe Theatre in London. Most recently, his book “The Shakespeare Fraud” is raising eyebrows with its complete cradle-to-grave theory of the Shakespeare mystery.
