Ben Sprecher has worked as a producer/general manager on Broadway, Off-Broadway and internationally for over thirty years. Sprecher began his New York career in 1978 as the Production Stage Manager for Broadway in Concert at Town Hall, the precursor to the current Encore Series. He became the General Manager for the Theatre de Lys in 1981 which he reconstructed and operated for over twenty years. That theatre became known as the Lucille Lortel Theatre during his tenure. He worked with Lucille Lortel, handling all of her theatrical business worldwide until she died in April of 2000. He also built and operated Off-Broadway’s Variety Arts Theatre and the Promenade Theatre. Sprecher, with the Shubert Organization, designed and built The Little Shubert Theatre, now Stage 42. An alumnus of California State University at Northridge where he concentrated in Set and Lighting Design, Sprecher began his theatrical career as the Lighting Designer for the 1974 World Tour of EARTH WIND & FIRE. After graduating, Sprecher stage-managed the first Equity Dinner Theatre in California where his relationships with Broadway directors ultimately allowed him to move and establish a career in New York. He worked for New York’s Music Fair Enterprises, and as Fred Walker’s assistant they produced many star vehicle touring productions. He also served as the Road Manager and Lighting Designer for Mitzi Gaynor’s International tour up until 1980. In 1981, Sprecher was hired as the General Manager of the Theatre de Lys and developed a close working partnership with Lucille Lortel. He went on to produce a variety of shows at this venue, the Promenade Theatre, the Variety Arts Theatre, and The Little Shubert Theatre as well as many shows on Broadway. He has been a member of the League of American Theatres and Producers and The Off Broadway League for which he served as their Vice President for fifteen years. He was the chief negotiator for Off Broadway’s collective bargaining agreements with ATPAM, SSD&C as well as part of the team negotiating all other agreements with other unions for over fifteen consecutive years. He also served as a Trustee for the Pension Fund for the Association of Press Agents and Managers for over seventeen years. Sponsored by Jose Ferrer, he became the Vice President of the Players Club. Ben Sprecher’s productions have received two Tony Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes, eleven New York Drama Critics Awards, fourteen Outer Critic Circle Awards, five Lucille Lortel Awards, and numerous Obie Awards.
