Interview #154
"You have those moments … when the sphere of influence of theatre is beyond the composite parts and beyond even the audience’s understanding; it’s tribal; it’s ancient; it’s in our souls, and we carry it forever. That’s the place we touch every now and then, and it makes it all worthwhile."

Robert LuPone was born in Brooklyn on July 29, 1946 and grew up in Northport, Long Island.  He attended a public school where his father was principal. From an early age, he had an interest in theatre and a desire to perform. In sixth grade, he remembers watching his sister, actress Patti LuPone, perform in a dance show and decided that he wanted to start taking lessons. His mother enrolled him in after-school tap classes. At fifteen, his dance instructor felt he had nothing left to teach Robert and sent him to New York City to learn from Martha Graham. He was also a gifted instrumentalist, playing oboe, clarinet, and saxophone, and ultimately decided not to pursue a career as a musician. He received a liberal arts and dance education at Adelphi University. In 1965, he transferred to Juilliard, where he graduated with a BFA in dance. He got his first job at nineteen in the chorus of The Pajama Game. A selection of his Broadway credits includes: The Magic Show (1974), Saint Joan (1977), True West (2000), A Thousand Clowns(2001), The Other Place (2013), Hand to God (2015). He has been nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical, A Chorus Line (1976),  and a Daytime Emmy for All My Children (1985). In addition, two MCC plays, FROZEN (2004) and REASONS TO BE HAPPY (2008) received nominations for the Tony Award for Best Play.
