Celebrating the visionaries who created New York's vibrant Off- and Off-Off-Broadway theater.
Agosto Machado, a pre-Stonewall street queen, is an actor, performance artist, and activist. A major contributor to the ‘downtown scene’ since the late 60s, he has performed in art galleries, movies and theaters. Some of the plays he is known for are: AMERIKA CLEOPATRA (1968), VAIN VICTORY (1970s), PEARLS OVER SHANGHAI ( with The Cockettes, 1970s), THE MAGIC SHOW OF DR. Agosto Machado describes himself as: “an orphan with a 6th grade education, and a degree from the university of the streets” who feels “very blessed he fell into the most magnificent, wonderful, Alice in Wonderland world of downtown.” He grew up in Hell’s Kitchen and was displaced with the community when ‘urban renewal’ razed the neighborhood to build the Lincoln Center cultural complex. He found himself in Greenwich Village, which at that time was teeming with an influx of new ideas, new artists, and diverse groups establishing previously unexpressed visions of the world. As a performer he was part of the new avant-garde movements both onstage and in film, and happenings in new downtown art galleries. He performed with Jack Smith, Jackie Curtis, Candy Darling, Alexis Delago, Holly Woodlawn, Harvey Fierstein, Jeff Weiss, Mario Montez, Ethyl Eichelberger, Black-Eyed Susan,The Cockettes, The Playhouse of the Ridiculous with John Vacarro.
