"That was our greatest moment where we would hit it like that. It was the most total magic I have ever felt onstage. We were so there, we were on. So tuned in with each other, it was marvelous. Nothing will ever equal it again as far as my loving being in ‘this.’ When we weren’t cooking, it served just as well as ‘Hell.’ It was Heaven and Hell"

In 1933 Faber was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, when it was a factory town. His father was a sheet metal worker, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World – a ‘Wobbly’ – and carried two blackjacks for protection. Faber fell for Jazz and other forms of music, a love not shared by friends, family or community. At 14 he worked in a bowling alley and failed his ‘dexterity’ tests, keeping him from becoming a brick layer. The movie Fantasia astonished him with its great music. No one in his family had any contact with the arts or advanced education. A career adviser suggested Business Administration and Faber was accepted into Marquette University in Milwaukee run by the Jesuits. On the debate team Faber made an argument against Joseph McCarthy who was a prominent national figure and respected at Marquette and in Milwaukee. After two years, Faber found the English Literature crowd and met artists and performers, one of whom got him a job doing children’s shows on radio. He soon joined The Marquette Players run by Father Walsh. After that he joined the Van Buren Players and directed. The show he directed was seen by Eva Le Gallienne who gave him a scholarship to direct at Lucille Lortel’s White Barn Theater, beginning his remarkable career in theater.
