John Glover was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1944. When he was eight years old, his family relocated to Salisbury, Maryland where he finished high school. As an only child, he says that he was often lonely and did not have a social circle until he became involved in his school’s theatre program, first as a stage hand and then as an actor. After graduating high school, he attended what was then known as Towson State Teacher’s College with the intention of becoming an English teacher and directing high school plays. However, his mom saw his love for theatre and got him a summer apprenticeship at the Barter Theatre where he auditioned for a show and got the lead role. Each summer, he would return to this job until he graduated college. After graduating as Towson’s first theatre major in 1966, he moved to New York to pursue a career in acting. A selection of his Broadway credits includes: Don Juan (1972), The Visit (1973), The Importance of Being Earnest (1977), The Drowsy Chaperone (2006), Waiting for Godot (2009), The Royal Family (2009), Death of a Salesman (2012), Macbeth (2013), and, most recently, Saint Joan (2018). In addition to being nominated for multiple Emmy Awards, he has been nominated for various theatre awards including the Robert Prosky Awards, Lucille Lortel Awards, Obie Awards, Drama Desk Awards, and Tony Awards, winning a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance in THE GREAT GOD BROWN (1973) as well as an Obie Award for Performance and a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for LOVE! VALOUR! COMPASSION! (1994).
