Annie Golden is a New York City based actress and singer who first performed on Broadway in the 1977 revival of Hair. After making her Broadway debut, she went on to perform in several musicals and plays, both on Broadway and Off-Broadway. Golden’s Off-Broadway credits include: A…MY NAME IS ALICE (1983), DR. (1993), THE SUGAR BEAN SISTERS (1995), ON THE TOWN (1997), SATURN RETURNS: A CONCERT (1998), LA TERRASSE (1999), AN EMPTY PLATE IN THE CAFÉ DU GRAND BOEUF (2000), PEOPLE BE HEARD (2004), THE ARK (2005), MIMI LE DUCK (2006), THE SHAGGS: PHILOSOPHY OF THE WORLD (2011), WE PLAY FOR THE GODS (2012), DISASTER! She has worked with numerous Off-Broadway theater companies in New York City including Manhattan Theatre Club, Primary Stages, The Women’s Project, The Public Theater, Playwrights Horizons, The Village Gate, The Vineyard Theatre, and WPA Theatre.
Golden was born and raised in Brooklyn. The oldest of six children in her family, she enjoyed singing in her school choirs. She first gained an interest in theater when she stepped into the role of the Stage Manager in the musical adaptation of Our Town. In high school, Golden joined the punk band The Shirts as their lead singer, performing regularly at CBGB’s. It is here Golden met Miloš Forman who was talent scouting for the movie version of Hair (1979) and cast her in the role of Jeanie. She also had the opportunity to perform in the 1977 Broadway revival of Hair, earning an Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) membership, as well as her Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (AFTRA) cards in the same year. Golden’s additional Broadway credits include: Ah, Wilderness (1988), The Full Monty (2000), Xanadu (2007), and Violet (2014). She has been featured in several television shows. Notable Credits include: Cheers, Dear John, and Law & Order. She currently portrays Norma Romano on the Netflix series Orange is the New Black. Golden works closely with composer Joe Iconis and has performed in two of his new musicals: Black Suits was performed at Barrington Stage Company in 2016; and Broadway Bounty Hunter, written for Golden who performed the lead character.
